The Pompidou Centre

In 1969, President Georges Pompidou decided that the vacant site of Plateau Beaubourg should be used for the construction of a new type of multidisciplinary cultural centre.

An international architectural competition was then announced which was first of its kind in France and was opened to architects of the whole world: it attracted 681 competitors from 49 different countries
The centre was inaugurated and opened in 1977 and The Pompidou Centre was a success from the start and became one of the most popular cultural venues in the world but also one of the most visited monuments in France.

A department of cultural development was then created which was responible for live performance, film screenings, lectures and many more. The fusion of the modern art museum and the centre for industrial design laid the foundations for an architecture and design collection that soon became one of the most impressive in the world!
